Type: Cross Stitch Patterns
Designer: Scarlet Letter

Note from the designer: "This sampler features two uncommon verses taken from the book Sentences and Maxims Divine, Moral and Historical, in Prose and Instruction of Human Life: and Particularly for the Improvement of Youth in Good Sence and correct English by George Shelley, published in London in 1712.

NO GAINS WITHOUT PAINS

CAST OFF BETIMES YOUR DARLING CRIMES

The sampler was made in Hoddesdon, a town in Hertfordshire about twenty miles north of London. A four sided pinwheel border surrounds a central reserve with the two verses above a large brick house flanked by quirky stocky trees that resemble broccoli stalks. Below this scene are two beautiful swans and a flowering basket. Stitches used in the sampler include, cross, counted satin, back, straight, eyelet, stem and satin filling and petit point (cross stitch over one thread of linen). On 40 count linen the reproduction sampler will measure approximately 14-1/2? x 17?, very close to the size of the original antique. The project is recommended for intermediate to advanced needleworkers.
