Not stark black but definitely black and not dark gray. Raven is a good description of it. Has a little variegation.

I use a lot of black floss in my stitching, and this is one of my favorites. Definitely a vivid black, but with a hint of green that makes it unique.

One of the thinks I dislike about dyed threads is that they often have no resemblance to the color called for. In the batch of threads I ordered most were fine. I did ask the staff to check for me. But Raven turned out to be Black with Drk Green. I used DMC black instead.

I really like this color, but I would advise any stitcher to be certain that they have all the floss they need for a pattern. This particular color can change dramatically from dye lot to dye lot. Sometimes there is a lot of green in it and other times very little. Some of my floss is several years old and if I need to add to it, I buy at least 2 skeins so I don't have a problem with an old skein not matching the new. cjh
