Note from the designer -This sampler is based on one finished by Susie Wade in 1892 at the age of 13. Susie used brightly colored wools, mainly red and green, on canvas, and honored her loved ones by including their initials. I decided to recreate Susie's sampler not as a true reproduction but as an adaptation. I changed and coordinated the colors, switched from wool to cotton thread, and from canvas to linen. I added two dividing bands and changed some of the motifs slightly, but most are Susie's. I also replaced her name and the initials of her loved ones with mine.
The model was stitched on 32-count Summer Khaki linen from Zweigart, Inc., using DMC embroidery thread and one color of overdyed thread from Olde Willow Stitchery. DMC substitutions are given for the overdyed thread.
Stitch count: 165 wide x 180 high. Finished size: 10 1/3" x 11 1/4"
Stitches used include cross stitch, alternating double backstitch, closed herringbone, backstitch, and smyrna cross. You can substitute cross stitch for most of the specialty stitches. Stitch diagrams are provided.
